Digipass one-button authenticators FAQs

How do one-button authenticators work?

One-button authenticators are small, handheld devices that generate unique one-time passwords for secure login with the press of a button. The device simplifies the authentication process for organizations, providing users with a simple, secure method to access critical business systems, no matter where the systems reside. It also enhances your organization’s security hygiene compared to traditional SMS codes and static passwords, by requiring something you have (a Digipass hardware authenticator) in addition to something you know (like a password).

Why are one-button authenticators more secure than static passwords or SMS codes?

One-button authenticators provide users with a changing, one-time password at the touch of a button. The password comes straight to the user’s hardware device for a single sign-on event, and is less vulnerable to phishing, SIM swapping, or credential guessing. One-button hardware authenticators are a secure and simple solution for enterprise access security.

Can I customize my Digipass one-button authenticator?

Yes. You can customize the device case to reflect your brand’s colors and company logo to reinforce your organization’s identity in every interaction. You can also choose from a variety of security options, including desired OTP length (typically 6 or 8 digits) and time- or event-based generation modes.

What happens if a Digipass one-button authenticator is stolen or lost?

Administrators can quickly deactivate the token in the authentication system and issue a replacement. The OTPs generated are unique and cannot be reused.

What’s the difference between Digipass GO 6 and Digipass GO 7 FIPS?

Digipass GO 6 and Digipass GO 7 FIPS are very similar. While both devices generate OTPs with the press of a button, are compact and lightweight, and have a customizable design and OTP length, only the Digipass GO 7 FIPS is FIPS 140-2 Level 2 Certified, meaning its cryptographic module has been validated by the U.S. government to meet the FIPS 140-2 security standards.

Are Digipass tokens OATH-compliant?

Yes, Digipass tokens implement OATH open standards (HOTP and/or TOTP), making them compatible with most authentication servers and IAM platforms.

Do these tokens require internet or mobile connectivity?

No. Hardware tokens generate codes offline, making them reliable anywhere, including remote or high-security environments.

What is the difference between time-based passwords (TOTP) and event-based passwords (HOTP)?
  • TOTP (time-based one-time password) codes change every fixed interval, e.g., 30 seconds.
  • HOTP (HMAC-based one-time password) codes change each time you press the button.
Which industries typically use hardware authenticators?

Hardware OTP tokens are widely used in sectors where secure access is critical, such as banking, government, healthcare, and enterprise IT. They support strong authentication policies and can help organizations meet regulatory or security requirements when integrated into a broader compliance framework.
